16 months

February 7, 2011

16 months does not feel much different than 15 months. We deal with different things on a different scale. For example, everything involves communication. She understands direction and partial explanation.
On the other hand, we need to watch what we say, because she repeats everything. She wanted my drink, called it water, I told her it was coke and she was then asking for coke. In so many ways that is not good.

Expectations have changed as well. My expectations are simply that she perform to the best of her ability. Since I know she has the ability, I do expect that she act and behave under certain standards. Call me strict (though I'm not at all, really), but it is not unreasonable as far as I am concerned. If I knew she had something developmentally that was setting her back, my expectations would simply be set at a different level. But the standard would be the same: do the best that she can personally handle.

She knows more, all done, milk and please in baby sign language. While she consistently does this, I also have her say the word. Because. she. can. It's that simple.

At 16 months, her vocabulary consists of (defined as words she knows, not simply words she can repeat as well as what I can remember):
-Mama
-Dada
-More
-Please (Peas)
-Up
-Down
-Milk
-Baby
-Night night (Ni ni)

-This/That

-Yogurt (Yoga)

-Broccoli (Broc-ee)
-Giraffe (Raff)
-Turtle
-Duck
-Elmo
-Chair
-Sit

-Uh oh
-Phone(Phoe)
-She can say most colors but doesn't necessarily know what they are
-Most animal sounds
-Alphabet a-z
-Numbers 1-20 (with help on the second 10)

Don't judge. Some of these are really awkward, I know ;)

The only problem with someone so vocal is that she doesn't understand, as I said in my last post, why not. She thinks if she demands, it should happen. Much like her momma! The only difference is, while I choose to ignore logical reasoning and do what I want, I understand it. Daughter dear, on the other hand, does not understand reasoning. She feels that if she is saying "up", "milk", "please", or even "no", that that demand should be met. I am looking forward to the day I see the lights go off, and she understands consequences. When does that happen? Like 3? 30? Ever...? We're all still learning and it's always an adventure!
